Ireland’s team of 66 Olympic athletes will return home with three bronzes, a silver and a gold medal today, but the official homecoming party is only taking place on Wednesday.
We weren’t too sure if we’d be having a homecoming celebration at-all over the weekend, seeing as the Olympic Council of Ireland and Dublin City officials couldn’t decide on who should foot the bill for such an event.
However, it seems that they’ve put their differences aside for now, because it has been announced that a big awl get together will take place this coming Wednesday. We were getting a bit worried there…
It was looking bad for the Lord Mayor’s office, as it seemed that they didn’t want to pay for the athletes’ homecoming. However, it seems as though the Lord’s Mayor office actually had the athletes’ best interests in mind as the they had maintained that they were simply holding off, so that the athletes could spend time with their families.
So, with that behind us, we can begin to look forward to our medal winners’ return. The team should land in Dublin Airport at lunchtime today, but people are being asked not to travel out to the airport in case there’s a mass stampede of people trying to get a glimpse at our first gold medal in too long.
The midweek festivities will take place in the Mansion House on Dawson St. at lunchtime on Wednesday. So make sure you pop along on the day.
