Earlier in the week we brought you the news that Roy Keane’s dog, Triggs, is releasing an autobiography… of sorts. So in honour of Keano’s canine, here are five famous dogs.

Triggs

For many people, Roy Keane’s golden Labrador, known as Triggs, is without a doubt the best known dog in football. Well, apart from a few of the WAGs of course (and we don’t mean tails).

Triggs is releasing an autobiography soon enough, which will be ‘translated’ by Paul Howard of the Ross O’Carroll Kelly fame. The book looks at how some Irish and British newspapers wrongly penned the death of Triggs back in 2010, among other things. But he’s not dead folks, and it’ll be a sad day when Triggs the golden lab heads for ‘the big farm’ out wesht.

Clark

You’re probably wondering, “Clark? Who the f*** is Clark?” Well, Clark was actually the most watched dog in 2011, according to YouTube. In his first two weeks of YouTube stardom, Clark managed to hit 20 million views. So what’s so special about this German Shepherd? Eh… he can talk, obviously?

Well, he can’t really talk, but his owner Andrew Grantham does one hell of a job making Clark look like he can. The video represents the ‘ultimate dog tease’ and it currently sits at 88 million views.

Laika

Laika is probably the most unfortunate dog that the world has seen… actually, being sent on a one-way mission into space makes Laika definitely the most unfortunate dog the world has seen.

Laika began life as a stray, but she was ‘lovingly’ picked up off the street by Russian scientists who wanted to test the capabilities of a living thing in space. The story that the Russians gave us, back in the day, was that Laika had made it to Day 6 before when she was euthanised before her oxygen supply ran out. However, it is widely believed that the mutt from Moscow died within hours of launch due to overheating.

Here’s Laika’s space capsule… which doubled as her coffin

Pal (aka Lassie)

Pal is easily the best-recognised dog in TV and film, but you’d know him better as Lassie… the original. Pal starred in a total of seven Lassie films from 1940 to 1958 .

Pal’s backstory is fairly interesting as he came from a long line of ‘famous’ collies and his family tree can be traced as far back as the nineteenth century, apparently.

Pal’s descendants still play Lassie to this day – it’s true! – but they’ll never match the original. Not that you’d know the difference.

Uggie

Uggie is the most recent dog to enter the human spotlight after featuring in the recent smash hit movie The Artist. His ability to shy away from kisses and pretending to have been shot has made this little guy the talk of the town.

Uggie was apparently rejected by at least two owners for being a hell-raiser of a dog. He was about to be sent to a dog pound (from which he probably wouldn’t have returned), but just in the nick of time, an animal trainer by the name of Omar Von Muller adopted the little pooch. He’s now tipped for an honorary Oscar.
