The head of the World Cup organising committee has admitted that vuvuzelas will only be banned from the stadiums if they are “thrown onto the pitch in anger”.

Danny Jordaan has admitted that the organisers have received many complaints about the instrument, which has provided an incessant backing track to all the games at the tournament to date.

Speaking to BBC Radio’s Sportsweek, he said, “This matter has been raised on many occasions. My personal view is of course, I would prefer singing … always a great generator of a wonderful atmosphere in the stadium.

“In the days of the struggle, we were singing – we did not blow anything. All through our history, songs always inspired and drove emotion.

“We’ve had complaints from the broadcasters and other individuals and it’s something we’re evaluating on an ongoing basis.

“But if any [vuvuzela] lands on the pitch in anger, we will not hesitate to take action.”
