Here’s what the weather looks like for Christmas Day and the remaining holiday period

Paul Moore

Relax, Santa will still be making those “unnecessary journeys.”

Bing Crosby may have famously dreamed about a White Christmas, but he definitely wasn’t singing about Ireland, especially if the people of Met Éireann are correct.

It seems that you won’t be able to throw snowballs at all of those unsuspecting local parishioners after Christmas Day mass, because just like the remaining *364 days of the year, it’s going to rain.

Here’s what the weather forecast looks like over the festive period.

Tomorrow will see any early morning showers gradually retreating to the north and west. Winds, although still strong to gale force in the north and west, will gradually ease from the south. FYI, we know that 99% of you will still be out and about in that mad scramble to buy Christmas presents. To this we say, fair play!

Christmas Eve looks like this. Mild, breezy and mostly cloudy. Scattered showers during the morning with rain spreading from the Atlantic during the afternoon and evening, heaviest and most persistent across Connacht and Ulster.

The night of Christmas Eve will be rather mild and blustery with rain and gusty southwest winds. Perfect then for a wee trip to the pub, or a cosy night in that’s spent watching the Father Ted Christmas special.

Santa’s travels won’t be too disrupted by the conditions though because Christmas Day is expected to be mild and breezy.

It’s currently looking rather cloudy with patchy rain about Atlantic coastal counties during daylight hours, but drier and perhaps a little brighter, at least for a time, in the east and southeast. Rain will become widespread, however, and heavier, during the evening and early night. Highest temperatures of 12 or 13 degrees in fresh to strong and gusty southwesterly winds.

If you fancy a day out at the races on St Stephens Day, please note that it’s expected to be colder, but also brighter with scattered showers in the west and north. Highest temperatures of 7 to 9 degrees in moderate westerly breezes.

Here’s to a great Christmas!

*We know it doesn’t rain ‘every’ day. Sort of.
