“The suspect in the case is not a member of An Garda Síochána.”
Gardaí investigating the alleged racial assault of a taxi driver in Dublin have confirmed that the suspect in question has come forward and presented themselves.
The incident took place at approximately 10pm on the Malahide Road in Donnycarney on Sunday 21 April.
Video footage of the incident has been widely circulated online, in which a male passenger is seen verbally and physically assaulting a taxi driver before abruptly fleeing the vehicle.
During the altercation, racial slurs directed towards the taxi driver are audible.
At one point, the suspect claims to be a “police officer”.
As of Sunday 28 April, investigating Gardaí have confirmed that the suspect is not a member of An Garda Síochána.
Their statement, issued on Sunday evening, reads:
“A suspect in the case has presented themselves at a north Dublin Garda station and Gardaí are following a definite line of enquiry.
“Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact Clontarf Garda Station on 01 666 4800 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
“The investigation is ongoing.”
The statement goes on to note that the Gardaí are aware of the video that is currently circulating online and are requesting, in consideration of the injured party, that it is not shared further.
“The suspect in the case is not a member of An Garda Síochána,” the statement concludes.
