No surprises there, really.
Enda Kenny, Taoiseach and leader of Fine Gael, has confirmed today that he intends to contest the next election and continue as Ireland’s head of government should Fine Gael secure a majority.
While he would not be drawn on his intentions beyond the next term, Mr. Kenny was clear in his ambitions “to win this general election, to lead the next government and to serve a full term.”
Furthermore, Enda intends for the current coalition to remain in place and for Labour to return to government as Fine Gael’s junior partner.
Polls taken in August suggest that support for the Joan Burton-led Labour party is at its lowest since 2014 at a paltry six percent.
Support for Fine Gael has risen to 27 percent however, and is likely to do so again once Ireland receives what is likely to be it’s best (or least terrible budget) since the financial crisis.
