Flights to Ireland from the U.K face disruption as 1,500 British airline staff vote to strike

Paul Moore

This could make the commute over Christmas much more difficult.

Following the recent news that British Airways staff at Heathrow plan to take industrial action in the coming weeks, there has been another development which could impact anyone that’s travelling to Ireland via the U.K.

Check-in staff, baggage handlers and cargo crew at 18 UK airports are planning a 48-hour strike from 23 December in a pay row, the Unite Union says.

In a statement released this afternoon, the union which represents the airline staff has said that they voted “overwhelmingly in favour of strike action over poverty pay and broken promises”

Workers at Swissport are taking the action following a long-running dispute over pay and conditions.

It said the action, which will hit Christmas travel, was “a last resort”.

Unite said it had members at the following airports: Aberdeen, Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Bournemouth, Cardiff, Doncaster, East Midlands, Edinburgh, Gatwick Glasgow, Heathrow, Leeds/Bradford, Luton, Manchester, Newcastle, and Southampton and Stansted.
