Garda in Wicklow are using air patrols to try and curb the high numbers of Christmas tree thefts in the area.

Most of Ireland’s Christmas tree farms are in the Wicklow area and this year they’re using some high tech equipment including hidden camera and air patrols, to stop people stuffing their sacks with Christmas trees.

The trees usually sell for between €35-€50 which make them a rather enticing target for some people to make a quick buck by stealing them and selling them off.

Gardaí have said that they’re using air patrols to cover large areas of ground to stop potential thieves.

According to Newstalk, the industry is worth €21m to the Irish economy as each year Irish Christmas tree growers cut down and distribute 550,000 Christmas trees for Ireland and Europe.
