Alexander Pacteau, the man convicted of killing Cork woman Karen Buckley in Glasgow, has given up on his appeal.

Pacteau had originally intended to fight the life sentence, which stipulates that he must serve a minimum of 23 years before he can apply for parole.

The man, 21, killed Karen Buckley after the two had met each other in a nightclub in April of this year, before attempting to destroy the evidence.

Buckley, who was 24 at the time of her death, was a nurse by profession and was pursuing a Masters degree in Glasgow when she was tragically murdered.

The parents of Karen Buckley have said that the women of Glasgow would not be safe with Pacteau free. Today’s revelations mean that he will be behind bars until he is at least 44 years of age.
