A long anticipated review

Colm Boohig

Some very welcome relief for people renting in Ireland.

The government have implemented a plan to freeze residential rent increases until 2017.

The Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government Alan Kelly has, today, released this statement outlining the new procedure.

According to The Journal, the idea is to tackle the national housing crisis, with the main points as follows:

  • Anybody who has faced a rent increase in 2015, will not face another until 2017.
  • Rent review periods increased from one to two years.
  • Increased notice periods for rent reviews.
  • Greater protection for tenants.

The statement claims that one of five families in Ireland rent instead of own a property, and that these same people “need greater security and certainty in their lease”.

So, there you have it. Do you think these measures will help ease the housing crisis in Ireland?
