Harry Murphy will fill the Wicklow senior football manager position left vacant by Mick O’Dwyer.
Filling Micko’s boots will be a tall order for the Rathnew native after the Kerry legend guided the Garden County in winning the Tommy Murphy Cup in 2008 and a fairytale championship run in 2009.
Micko parted company with his adopted county after this summer’s All-Ireland qualifier replay defeat to Armagh, apparently feeling he had brought them as far as he could.
The Wicklow County Board has wasted little time in appointing a new boss and Murphy brings a record of success at club level with him into the job.
In his 12-year spell in charge of Rathnew, Murphy guided the club to four senior titles in-a-row between 2000 and ’03 and masterminded three more titles in ’05, ’09 and ’10.
In 2001, he won a Leinster club title with the club known as ‘The Village’.
It is not yet clear whether Micko will continue his extensive managerial career but he has been linked with moves west during the summer as both Sligo and Galway were touted as potential destinations.
