Winter is coming.
Those of us dreaming of White Christmas could be in for a treat next month as a high-profile weather forecaster has predicted that snow will fall in Ireland during the festive season this year.
According to the Sunday Independent, Ken Ring, a long-range weather consultant and presenter on Channel Seven and Channel Nine in Australia, has predicted a pretty mild winter for Ireland, but has predicted snow to fall around Christmas and said that our last ‘snow day’ could arrive as late as May 2016.
Ring, the author of the Weather Almanacs for Ireland, said: “The coming winter should be fairly mild, with a storm in the first week of January and snow mostly in January and March. Winter is close to being typical for Ireland, conditions will not be too severe, but with the usual occasional rain and snow.”
As for the weather around Christmas time, he added: “There may be fluctuating temperatures with rain in the first and third weeks (of December) and a temperature drop around 12-16 (degrees).
“Frost is likely just before Christmas Day, then on December 26 come cold south easterly winds followed by wintry rain as temperatures barely climb above freezing. Expect snow on or near 12 and 28 of December.”
Ring’s predictions contradict recent claims that Ireland is set for its worst winter in 50 years due to the presence of the El Nino weather pattern, which was partly responsible for the harsh winters of 2009 and 2010.
