Here’s what the weather will be like for the Pope’s visit

Carl Kinsella

Even if you’re not attending the papal visit, it still won’t hurt to know the weather forecast.

Pope Francis is set to visit Ireland this weekend, and all the tickets that went on sale to see him — whether in Croke Park, Phoenix Park or Knock — have been sold out.

Public transport will be a mess, plenty of people will be outdoors, so God is sure to send some sunshine our way. Right? Not quite.

Saturday won’t be so bad, with Met Éireann forecasting: “Saturday will be mostly dry with sunny spells for much of the country. In the northeast and north a few showers will develop in the afternoon. These will gradually die out in the late afternoon and early evening. Highest temperatures of 15 to 17 degrees with mainly moderate westerly breezes.”

However, it’s Sunday, that most holy of days, where we might be let down: “Sunday will start off dry. However, rain will spread quickly from the west through the afternoon and evening, possibly heavy in the south for a time. Highest temperatures of 15 to 19 degrees with light to moderate southerly breezes.”

The Pope is set to visit Knock, in the west of Ireland, on Sunday morning — before returning to Dublin.

The forecast can be read in full here.
