Drivers are being warned to watch out for black ice as wintry weather sweeps the country

Tony Cuddihy

In case you hadn’t noticed, it’s a bit nippy out there.

Drivers across the country have been warned to look out for black ice on the roads as a spell of severe wintry weather sets in.

Snow and ice warnings have been issued across the country as we wait for the big freeze; the heaviest snow will fall in Ulster, Connacht, north Leinster and west Munster with Donegal, Cavan, Monaghan, Sligo, Mayo and Leitrim the worst affected counties.

Motorists are being advised to clear windows and mirrors before leaving, while they are also being warned not to use hot water on frozen windscreens.

As well as watching out for black ice, drivers are advised to slow down and leave extra distance between you and the vehicle in front.

The cold snap is expected to last well into the weekend.
